Admission Requirements

In compliance with the provisions of article 6 of the FCT Research Fellowships Regulation (Reg. No. 950/2019) - Research Scholarship for Master: a) have a Master's degree in Biology, Biochemistry, or related scientific areas b) have previous laboratory experience relevant to the work plan to be developed c) good command of written and spoken English

Work plan

The grantee will develop research activities within the scope of the project entitled "Exploring the therapeutic potential of active compounds in Pinus elliottii extract for Angelman syndrome intervention". The work plan includes differentiation of human embryonic cell lines (hESC) with and without the deletion causing Angelman syndrome in neuronal cultures and evaluation of the biological activity of the volatile compounds of Pinus elliottii extract in the survival and functionality of neurons. The fellow will work closely with the Angelman Association e.V. and other associations involved in the ongoing observational study. The results of this research will contribute to the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of the disease and serve as a basis for the development of new therapies for Angelman Syndrome.

Duration of the fellowship

The fellowship will last for 12 months, starting in November 2024. The scholarship contract is not renewable.

Workplace

The work will be developed at the Laboratory of Forensic Molecular Pathology and Biochemistry of the Egas Moniz Interdisciplinary Research Center and at the Institute of Bioengineering and Biosciences, of Instituto Superior Técnico, under the scientific supervision of Evguenia Bekman.

Selection methods

The selection methods to be used will be the following: 1) Master's degree in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry or Biological Engineering, Biomedical, Biotechnological or related, with a final grade of 17 or higher (30% of the final grade); 2) ) curriculum evaluation experience in stem cell biology, cell culture and neuronal differentiation will be valued) (30%), and 3) individual interview of the candidates selected by the evaluation of points 1) and 2), by zoom or presentially (40%). The candidate with the best classification will be selected.

Form of publicity / notification of results

All candidates will be notified by e-mail of the Final Result of the Evaluation.
