To apply for the Doctoral Research Scholarship, it is necessary to: • Be a graduate or master in the areas required by the PhD Program in Biomedical Sciences of the Egas Moniz University Institute; • Reside in Portugal on a permanent and customary basis, if the work plan associated with the scholarship takes place, in part, in foreign institutions (mixed scholarships), a requirement applicable to both nationals and foreign citizens. • Not having benefited from a PhD or doctoral fellowship in companies directly funded by FCT, regardless of its duration. • Not to hold the Doctor's degree.

Work plan

The work plan must contain the following elements: • Title; • Keywords (maximum 5); • Summary (maximum 150 words). The summary is the summary of the candidate's work plan. A good summary should be clear and well structured, showing that the candidate is able to summarize the object of study, objectives and the main expected contributions of the research work; • State of the Art (maximum 500 words). The state of the art, or literature review, gathers, analyzes and discusses the information published on the theme of the work plan. Its purpose is to theoretically base the object of investigation, referring to previous studies, which should be interrelated and confronted, especially if they are contradictory, as well as to point out the originality of the proposal; • Objectives (maximum 300 words). This section is intended to describe the main research issues and objectives to be achieved with the development of the project; • Detailed description (maximum 1000 words). This section details the work plan to be developed and demonstrate how the proposed objectives will be achieved. This description shall provide all the key elements to enable the analysis and evaluation by the panel, including the methodological approach, the description of the tasks to be carried out, their interdependencies and chaining, as well as the corresponding lead times; • Schedule, indicating the timing of the proposed tasks; • References: Indication of a maximum of 30 bibliographic references that are considered fundamental to the proposed project. The scientific advisor of the Work Plan, or one of the advisors, with more than one, will be a researcher from the Egas Moniz Interdisciplinary Research Center.

Duration of the fellowship

The duration of the scholarships is, as a rule, annual, renewable up to a maximum of four years (48 months), and may not be granted scholarship for a period of less than 3 consecutive months. In the case of a mixed stock exchange, the period of the work plan in a foreign institution may not exceed 24 months.

Workplace

The work will be developed at the Egas Moniz Interdisciplinary Research Center.

Selection methods

The evaluation takes into account the merit of the candidate, the documentary evaluation of the merits of the work plan and the interview. Applications considered admissible shall be scored on a scale of 0 to 20 values, rounding to one hundredths, in each of the following evaluation criteria: • Criterion A - Documentary Evaluation of the Merit of the Candidate, with a weight of 40%: the Subcriterion A1 (0,3%) - Academic Course, with a weight of 12%; the Subcriterion A2 (0,5%) - Personal Curriculum, weighing 20%; the Subcriterion A3 (0,2%) - Letter of Motivation, with weight of 8%. • Criterion B - Documentary Evaluation of the Merit of the Work Plan, with a weight of 40%. • Criterion C - Interview, with a weight of 20%. The score of subcriterion A1 (Academic Course) corresponds (i) to the simple arithmetic average of the final classifications contained in the certificates of undergraduate and master's degrees (pre or post-Bologna), or (ii) to the final classification contained in the integrated master's degree certificate, as applicable. For the purposes of calculating subcriterion A1: • When applicants have more than one equivalent degree and/or master's degree (equivalent number of ECTS credits), it is up to the panel to decide which academic degree(s) best suits the work plan and should therefore be counted for the calculation of the classification of subcriterion A1. The evaluation panel should consider the other course(s) presented by the candidate in the evaluation of subcriterion A2, valuing their personal curriculum. • When the certificates of completion of the academic degree specify only a qualitative classification (e.g. pre-Bologna masters), it will be converted into numerical classification according to qualitative classification conversion table. The score of subcriterion A2 (Personal Curriculum) corresponds to the integrated evaluation of the merits of the academic, scientific and professional career of the candidate and its adequacy to the requirements of the doctoral program and the implementation of the proposal of a work plan presented. The score of subcriterion A3 (Letter of Motivation) takes into account the clarity with which the applicant identifies the reasons underlying his application and on which he bases his suitability for carrying out the proposed research activities. The overall score of criterion A (Document Evaluation of The Applicant's Merit) results from the application of the following formula: A = (0.3 x A1) + (0.5 x A2) + (0.2 x A3) The score of criterion B (Documental Evaluation of the Merit of the Work Plan) corresponds to the integrated assessment (i) of its clarity, (ii) of the reasoned relevance of the object of study, (iii) the scientific quality of the state of the art, (iv) the adequacy of the methodology to the proposed objectives and (v) the feasibility of the work plan. The score of criterion C (Interview) takes into account (i) the defense of the work plan presented and (ii) the demonstration of the maturity and autonomy of the candidate to perform it. All candidates whose applications meet the admissibility requirements set out in point 4 of this Notice shall be interviewed by the members of the panel on a date to be scheduled once the documentary evaluation of the applications has been completed. Interviews may take place in person or by videoconference. For the purposes of the decision on the granting of scholarships, applicants shall be ordered according to the weighted average of the classification obtained in each of the 3 criteria, translated by the following formula: Final rating = (0.4 x A) + (0.4 x B) + (0.2 x C) For the purposes of tiebreaker, the ordering of candidates shall be carried out on the basis of the classifications assigned to each of the evaluation criteria in the following order of precedence: criterion A, criterion B, criterion C. Important notice for candidates with diplomas issued by foreign higher education institutions: • Applicants with diplomas issued by foreign higher education institutions may apply and will be evaluated with the same criteria as candidates with diplomas issued by Portuguese institutions, provided that they present, in application, proof of the recognition of academic degrees and the conversion of the final classification to the Portuguese classification scale in accordance with the applicable legislation. • Applicants with recognized foreign diplomas who do not present proof of the conversion of the final classification to the Portuguese classification scale will be evaluated with a minimum rating of 10 points in subcriterion A1. • In any case, scholarship contracts with candidates with diplomas issued by foreign institutions will only be concluded by submitting the proof of recognition of academic degrees and conversion of the final classification, as indicated above.
