Core Lab: Clinical Dental Research Unit (CDRU)

The Clinical Dental Research Unit (CDRU) of the Egas Moniz Interdisciplinary Research (CiiEM) Centre, studies primarily the pathologies treated in the Egas Moniz Dental Clinics (CDEM), where pre- and post-graduate students carry out the practical curricular plans in the diverse áreas of Dental Medicine, Speech Therapy, Nutrition and Psichology, available at CDEM.

The CDEM performs more than 60000 consultations /year. Among them approx. 8000 are first annual consultations. It provides additionally teaching, research and community-directed services.

The CDEM provides consultations and treatments in an extended schedule, contemplating all Dental Medicine specialities: Screening and Urgency, Oral Rehabilitation, Implantology, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Dentistry, Surgery, Periodontology, Dentistry, Endodontics, Oral Pathology and Preventive and Community Dental Medicine.
Since 2014 CDEM grew from a health unit with 800 m2 to about 1200 m2 of área, 100 Dental Medical chairs, and a register of about 31600 users.

Presently, following the evolution of the clinical process of screening to a computerized system, the Clinical Board of Directors developed an Egas Moniz Oral Health Database for Adults, approved and supervisioned by the National Committee for Data Protection. This database will support future clinical research, strengthening Egas Moniz as an important Oral Health Barometer.

Concerning the Community’s interactions and Social Responsibility, the Egas Moniz CRL Board of Directors has established protocols with a diversity of associations in order to provide the best follow up of Oral Health among the poorest populations in our region. At the same time, it promotes the presence of volunteers teachers and students in various schools and health fairs to educate the population for Oral Health. Partnerships with CRIAR-T, Associação Meninos de Oiro, Associação Protetora dos Diabéticos de Portugal, País em Rede, Campus Neurológico Sénior and ACES Almada-Seixal are particularly relevant concerning the full integration of children, young people and their families.

In the latest years several partnerships with faculties and companies were also created. Among them are worth mentioning, the University of Ribeirão Preto (Brasil), University of São Paulo, Institute of Biosciences (Brasil), University of Mindelo (Cabo Verde), New University of Lisbon, Nova Medical School/Faculdade de Ciências Médicas, University of Pisa (Italy) and, recently, with the Université Paris Descartes (France), in a world project in digital Anatomy supported by UNESCO.

In parallel, the Egas Moniz Dental Clinic has provided the clinical practice for international postgraduations, in cooperation with its coordinators. It has invited world reference names from New York University School of Dentistry, Michigan University School of Dentistry, University of Southern California School of Dentistry, Universidade de São Paulo, Leuven University, Geneva University, among others. These are courses in the áreas of Periodontology, Endodontics, Minimally Invasive Dentistry and the Specialty in Orthodontics, among other short courses and workshops.
